Melanotan II (MT-II, CAS 121062-08-6) is a synthetic cyclic heptapeptide analogue of α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone developed in melanocortin-system research at the University of Arizona. The lactam-bridged cyclic structure and D-Phe substitution give it far greater potency and metabolic stability than native α-MSH.
It acts as a non-selective agonist across the melanocortin receptors (MC1R, MC3R, MC4R, MC5R). MC1R activation on melanocytes upregulates tyrosinase and downstream melanin-biosynthesis enzymes, which is why Melanotan II is a standard tool compound in melanogenesis and pigmentation research.
